You’re Functioning. So Why Does Everything Feel So Hard?
- Whitney Natiello
You’re getting through the day.
You go to work. Answer the texts. Take care of people. Make decisions. Handle what has to be handled.
From the outside, you may look completely fine.
But you don’t feel fine.
Maybe you’re more anxious than usual. You aren’t sleeping well. You’re reactive. Decisions feel harder. Your body hurts. Things that normally wouldn’t overwhelm you suddenly do.
Or maybe you can’t even explain it.
You just know that everything feels harder than it normally does.
You may be functioning from survival
When something feels threatening—an accident, an argument, frightening news, a diagnosis, a loss, even one intense conversation—your brain shifts toward survival.
That’s useful when there is danger.
But sometimes the event ends and your brain continues functioning as though an active threat still exists.
And you can still function that way.
You can work, parent, cook, drive, answer emails and make plans. You may simply have less access to perspective, flexible thinking, problem-solving and grounded decision-making.
You probably aren’t thinking, My brain is stuck in survival.
You’re thinking:
Why is this so hard? Why don’t I feel like myself?
Calming can help. But sometimes you need something different.
Acupuncture, yoga, meditation, breathwork, exercise, massage and prayer can all help a stressed system settle.
But sometimes the event is over while the stress response to it has not fully resolved.
You may not connect what happened then with why things feel harder now. You just know decisions feel harder, you’re more reactive, or you’re struggling with things you would normally handle more easily.
That is the space B.R.A.I.N.S. Technique™ was created to address.
And sometimes the shift is surprisingly simple:
Life becomes more doable.
Her Car Was Fine. Her Nervous System Wasn’t.
More than a year after a near-fatal car accident, another vehicle pulled out in almost the same way as the car that had hit her.
This time there was no accident. She was safe.
But she immediately began shaking and crying. Her heart raced. She was close to hyperventilating and had to pull off the road.
She used B.R.A.I.N.S. Technique™. About ten minutes later, she reported that her breathing and heart rate had settled, the shaking had stopped, and she was able to drive again.
The danger wasn’t happening again. But her brain registered it as a threat, and her nervous system reacted as if it were happening all over again.
Kelly Ayn could think—and sleep.
Kelly Ayn had been experiencing anxiety and sleeplessness during intense, long term stress.
After one B.R.A.I.N.S. session, she described feeling “lighter, more relaxed, and clear headed.” She began seeing solutions she hadn’t seen before, and that night had “one of my best night’s sleep in months.”
Shirley noticed it in her body.
Shirley began a B.R.A.I.N.S. Technique session with neck pain she rated a 10.
At the end, it was a 3.
The next day she said: “Pain in my neck diminished! It's a 1!”
And Linda discovered it doesn’t have to be perfect.
Linda, while still learning B.R.A.I.N.S., described discovering that the skill could still help even when she didn’t do it perfectly.
"Because this process I can do myself- ... but I don't have to rely upon myself when it feels- ... too difficult. And even when I do it by myself, not fully correctly, it fricking works. And then when I receive sessions- Yeah ... from you, it totally works."
"Even though I'm not feeling fully confident, and I know I'm not fully proficient in the Brains Technique, I can already say that it is among the most important courses I've ever taken in my life."
What if you don’t have to keep pushing through?
Maybe you don’t know why you feel off.
Maybe you’ve been telling yourself you should be over it, nothing is really wrong, or you just need to get yourself together.
But if you’re functioning and still don’t feel like yourself, your brain may still be organizing around survival.
And when that begins to change, you are better able to think more clearly, see choices, sleep, make the decision, have the conversation, and deal with what is actually happening now.
Everything becomes a little more doable.
Not because life suddenly became perfect.
Because you became more available to deal with it.
If you’ve been thinking, Something is off. I don’t feel like myself. I know I need to do something, but I don’t know what, this may be worth experiencing for yourself.
